Unless you work in a unionized company that has a collective bargaining agreement or a government agency with civil service protection, you work under the legal doctrine of employment at will. This means that your employer can fire you at any time without prior notice and without cause. This may sound unfair the first time you hear it, but it’s actually the fairest way of doing things.
